Stephanie's Tips
• Draw your jack-o’-lantern face before adding the drink. Drawing a pumpkin face on a cold, condensation-covered cup is a battle nobody needs.
• Keep the permanent marker on the outside of the cup and away from the rim.
• Make all your jack-o’-lantern cups ahead of time if you're serving these for a Halloween party. Then you only have to pour and froth when everyone is ready for a drink.
• Don't over-froth the half-and-half. You want a creamy foam that's still pourable so it can sit right on top of the orange soda.
• Serve these right away. The carbonation and fresh cold foam are what make them so good!

Jack-O’-Lantern Dirty Soda ingredients
- Orange soda: The bright orange soda gives us the perfect jack-o’-lantern color without doing anything extra. A 7.5-ounce mini can is just the right amount for one drink.
- Ice: Keeps everything nice and cold and helps support that creamy layer of cold foam.
- Half-and-half: This creates the creamy base for our vanilla cold foam.
- Vanilla syrup: Sweetens and flavors the cold foam and tastes delicious with the orange soda.

How to make a Jack-O’-Lantern Dirty Soda
Start with an empty clear plastic cup. Using a black permanent marker, draw a jack-o’-lantern face on the outside of the cup. Make it spooky, make it cute, or make it look like you drew it two minutes before the kids walked through the door. It all works.
Fill the cup with ice, then pour in the orange soda, leaving about 1 inch of space at the top for the cold foam.

In a separate cup, combine the half-and-half and vanilla syrup. Use a milk frother or whisk to froth the mixture until it's creamy and foamy but still pourable.
Pour the vanilla cold foam over the orange soda and serve immediately. That's it! Three ingredients, one little jack-o’-lantern face, and suddenly regular orange soda is way more fun.
How should I serve Jack-O’-Lantern Dirty Soda?
These are such an easy Halloween surprise for the kids without turning your kitchen into a full-blown Pinterest project. Make them for Halloween movie night, an after-school treat, a Halloween party, or alongside dinner during spooky season. If you're serving a group, draw a different jack-o’-lantern face on every cup. Not only is it cute, but everyone can tell which drink is theirs.
FAQs (Because Life’s Too Busy for Guesswork)
Yes! Draw the jack-o’-lantern face on the outside of a regular drinking glass with a black permanent marker, keeping the marker away from the rim. When you're finished, rub a little hand sanitizer over the marker to help remove it, then wash the glass thoroughly with dish soap and water. Test a small area first if you're using painted, coated, or specialty glassware.
Use your favorite orange soda. The bright orange color is what creates the jack-o’-lantern look, so there's no need to get fancy. Regular or zero-sugar orange soda can both work.
I wouldn't assemble the entire drink ahead of time because the soda will lose carbonation, the ice will melt, and the cold foam will eventually settle. You can draw the jack-o’-lantern faces on your cups ahead of time and keep the drink ingredients refrigerated until you're ready to serve.
Yes. Vanilla coffee creamer can be used, but because it's already sweetened and flavored, reduce or leave out the vanilla syrup and adjust it to taste. Otherwise, things can get very sweet very quickly.
No. A milk frother makes it quick and easy, but you can also use a small whisk. Froth the half-and-half and vanilla syrup until it's foamy but still pourable.
Substitutions and variations
- Orange soda: Use your favorite brand of orange soda. A zero-sugar version can also be used.
- Half-and-half: Vanilla coffee creamer can work in its place. Since creamer is already sweetened, start with less vanilla syrup or leave it out completely.
- Vanilla syrup: Regular or sugar-free vanilla syrup can be used.
- Jack-o’-lantern faces: Give every cup a different face if you're making these for a party. Cute, spooky, completely questionable artistic ability, they're all welcome here.
How should I store Jack-O’-Lantern Dirty Soda?
Jack-O’-Lantern Dirty Soda is best enjoyed immediately. Once it sits, the ice starts melting, the soda loses its carbonation, and the cold foam begins to settle. If you're making these for a party, decorate the cups ahead of time and keep the orange soda and cold foam ingredients refrigerated. Then assemble each drink right before serving.

Notes

- A regular drinking glass can be used instead of a plastic cup. Test the marker on a small area first, especially on painted, coated, or specialty glassware. A little hand sanitizer should remove it from the glass.
- If using vanilla coffee creamer instead of half-and-half, reduce or omit the vanilla syrup since flavored creamer is already sweetened.
- For parties, draw the jack-o’-lantern faces on the cups ahead of time, but wait to assemble the drinks until you're ready to serve.
- Jack-O’-Lantern Dirty Soda is best enjoyed immediately while the soda is carbonated and the cold foam is fresh.
