FAQs (Because Life’s Too Busy for Guesswork)
Yes, if you would prefer to leave the meat out and make this a vegetarian dish, you most definitely could.
In this dish, you do not need to cook the tortellini before adding it to the crockpot. It will cook in the sauce while it is simmering. So you must use all of the sauces called for. It may seem like a lot when you first stir it together, but it is needed for the pasta to cook.
Yes, if you would like the dish to have more than spinach, you can add additional vegetables like bell peppers, mushrooms, or even zucchini.
If you want to have extra meat in the dish, you can add more meat, but you will also need to add more sauce to account for the meat used.
If you would like to make the dish spicy, you can use cayenne pepper or red pepper flakes. Another option is to use a spicy sausage.
While I have done this before, I do not recommend it. The pasta starts to dry out and all of that cheese starts to stick and harden on the side of the crockpot.
What are substitutions that I can make?
- Italian sausage – you can use a mild or homestyle sausage if you would prefer.
- Marinara sauce – You can use homemade sauce if you prefer. But if you use store-bought, go with a brand you know you like.
- Alfredo sauce – homemade is an option. If you go with the jar sauce, you will want to go with a traditional flavor.
- Mozzarella cheese – pre-shredded is an option, but the block fresh shredded will melt and blend better into the pasta when stirred.
How should I store my Crockpot Tortellini?
- Crockpot Tortellini should be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 3-4 days. To reheat, place single servings in the microwave with a paper towel over the bowl to prevent splattering. Microwave for 45-60 seconds at a time, stirring as needed until thoroughly heated.

Crockpot Tortellini

Equipment
- Crockpot
- Large skillet
- Wooden spoon
Ingredients
- 1 pound ground Italian sausage
- 36 ounces tortellini frozen
- 24 ounces marinara sauce
- 15 ounces alfredo sauce
- 3 cups baby spinach
- 8 ounces mozzarella cheese shredded
- ¼ cup parmesan cheese
Instructions
- Add your ground sausage to a large skillet over medium-high heat. Using a wooden spoon, break the sausage into bite-sized pieces and continue to cook until it has browned. Transfer the sausage to your crockpot.
- Stir in the tortellini, marinara sauce, alfredo sauce, and spinach into the crockpot. Top the pasta mixture with mozzarella cheese.
- Cover and set for 4 to 5 hours on low or 2 to 3 hours on high.
- Stir the pasta and sprinkle with parmesan cheese.
Notes
- This dish can easily be made vegetarian by leaving out the meat.
- Do not cook the tortellini before adding it to the crockpot. It will cook directly in the sauce, so it is important to use the full amount of sauce listed in the recipe.
- You can add extra vegetables such as bell peppers, mushrooms, or zucchini if you want more than just spinach.
- If adding extra meat, be sure to increase the amount of sauce to keep the texture and moisture balanced.
- To add heat, use cayenne pepper, red pepper flakes, or substitute in a spicy sausage.
- Avoid leaving the dish on warm for too long after cooking. The pasta will start to dry out, and the cheese can stick and harden around the edges of the crockpot.

I love easy dump-and-go recipes, this crockpot tortellini sounds perfect!
We were all craving a full Italian dinner night, but I didn’t have the time. Using the crockpot to make this tortellini dish was so effortless and tasty. I got back early, so I could make the sour cream chicken with some extra Parmigiano as well.
That is such an amazing idea. I’ll have to try that out.
Is the tortellini refrigerated or frozen?
I use frozen tortellini in this recipe.
I love an easy crockpot meal, and this looks both easy and delicious! Love the combination of the alfredo and marinara sauce. Thanks for a great recipe!
