Ingredients

  • Purple Jello
  • Orange Jello
  • Green Jello
  • Boiling water
  • Vodka
  • Cold water
  • Gelatin envelopes
Jello mix, gelatin, water, vodka

Directions

Combine the Jello powder and gelatin in a medium saucepan or heat-safe bowl. Pour boiling water and stir until the gelatin has dissolved. Once dissolved, mix in the cold water, then the Vodka.

Repeat these steps for the other two Jello flavors.

Place the ghost mold on a flat plate for easier handling. Using a measuring spoon, pour the Jello into the mold, alternating flavors for each row. Refrigerate the Jello shot ghosts for 8 hours or overnight.

Once set and firm, spray the bottoms of the ghosts with cooking spray to help with removal and prevent sticking. Run warm water over the bottom of the mold for 15-20 seconds, then gently turn the mold inside out to release the ghosts.

In a small bowl, mix a tiny amount of vodka with edible gold to create a paint-like consistency. Use a small paintbrush to apply the gold dust to the ghosts' faces. For extra shine, optionally spray with edible gold spray for extra shine.

Let dry for 1-2 minutes, then store the ghosts in an airtight container in the refrigerator until ready to serve.

How do you serve this?

  • Serve them on a platter with a tray of ice underneath to prevent them from melting if the climate is hot.

FAQs (Because Life’s Too Busy for Guesswork)

Do I have to put extra gelatin?

Yes, because the extra gelatin helps the Jello shots to be firmer, which is needed to get them out of the mold. If you leave the extra gelatin out the mold will not work as intended.

Can I put edible glitter inside the Jello mix?

You can, but when using this type of mold, the glitter will collect at the bottom of the mold and will cause a dome of glitter to sit on top of the head of the Jello shot ghosts. I would advise leaving it out because the ghosts must set upside down.

What if I smear the edible gold dust on the Jello shot?

It’s okay, the edible gold dust is very forgiving and can be whipped off or added more if needed.

I only have two molds. Can I do one jello flavor at a time, so I don't have the mix setting up on me?

Yes, you will need to work in batches with plenty of time if you would like to do all three flavors.

How do I make these without alcohol?

Just replace the ½ cup of Vodka with water for a total of 1 cup boiling water and 1 cup of cold water.

What are substitutions that I can make?

  • Jello- I usually go for the classic orange, lime, and grape flavors, which add a delightful mix of fruity flavors with the classic Halloween colors, but you can choose whatever flavors you would like to fit your color scheme.
  • Vodka- Flavored Vodka, Rum, and Tequila are some good options.
  • Gold Dust - Edible markers are a great way to draw on the ghost faces; just make sure to choose a dark color, such as black.

How should I store my leftovers?

  • You can store them in an airtight container for up to 3 days. Just be aware that the longer they stay in the refrigerator, the firmer they become, which can alter the texture of the Jello shot.

Notes

  • I find it easier to remove them from the mold if left overnight.
  • Push each side of the ghosts out simultaneously to prevent a piece of the ghost from getting stuck inside the mold.
  • There should be more gold dust than vodka to apply it smoothly onto the Jello shots.
  • Serve Jell-O shot ghosts on a platter, and if the room is warm, set the Jell-O shot ghosts on top of a tray with ice to prevent them from melting.

Okay, I had to make these. The husband & I haven’t done Jello shots since college. This was too fun to pass up. It worked out perfectly, and now I can’t wait to see what everyone thinks at our Halloween Party.
